2024 Design Awards: Winners Announced

Excellence in Generic City's built environment was celebrated last night at the Civic Society's biennial Design Awards. The judges were impressed by the high standard of entries, particularly in the conservation category.
Chairman's Award
The overall winner, receiving the prestigious Chairman's Award, was the restoration of The Historic Hall in the Historic Quarter. The sensitive repair of the 13th-century roof structure and the discreet integration of modern heating were praised as exemplary.
New Building Category
In the New Building category, the award went to the New Science Block at The Grammar School. The judges noted how the contemporary design sits comfortably alongside its historic neighbors, using matching brickwork but with a modern form.
"These awards demonstrate that development in a historic city need not be a pastiche," said the Chairman of the Judging Panel. "Good modern design can enhance our heritage."
